(This does not apply to invited plenary speakers). The chair of the organizing committee may make exceptions to this request. You are invited to contribute a presentation for this conference in one of the following formats. Minisymposia: A minisymposium consists of four 25-minute presentations, with an additional five minutes for discussion after each presentation. Prospective minisymposium organizers are asked to submit a proposal consisting of a title, a description (not to exceed 100 words), and a list of speakers and titles of their presentations using the Conference Management System available at: http://meetings.siam.org/start.cfm?CONFCODE=ls06 To ensure balance, we would prefer that a single individual not be the organizer of more than one minisymposium. It is recommended that the minisymposium organizer make the first presentation. Each minisymposium speaker should submit a 75-word abstract. The organizing committee will referee minisymposium proposals. The number of minisymposia may be limited to retain an acceptable level of parallelism in the conference sessions. For further minisymposium organizer and participant information, please visit: http://www.siam.org/meetings/guidelines/mini_guide.php ---------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 23 Dec 2005 13:18:54 -0600 From: "Panetta, Carl" To: SMBnet@smb.org Subject: SMB Future Meetings Committee The Future Meetings Committee is currently soliciting proposals for hosting the SMB annual meeting in 2008 or later. The THI-DOC programme is conducted by the Swedish Institute for Infectious Control (SMI) and Microbiology and Tumor Biology Center (MTC), Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden. The programme offers 8 PhD studentships. THI-DOC is designed for highly motivated students with a strong basis in molecular sciences and a keen interest in dissecting the interaction of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) and HIV with the host. THI-DOC will offer researchers in the early stage of their career a unique opportunity of integrated interdisciplinary studies of association between these two major pathogens. The research projects will address the interaction of MTB-HIV with the host cells and the net effect of the concurrent infections on immune responses using state-of-the-art techniques. These studies will lead to a deeper understanding of the interaction of the two organisms and will aid in the development of new drugs, diagnostics and vaccines. At the educational level the "THI-DOC" project will provide integrated training in infection biology, cellular pathogenesis, immunology, molecular epidemiology, mechanisms of drug resistance, theoretical biology and bioinformatics, and the development of novel diagnostics and vaccines against TB and HIV/AIDS. The programme encompasses 4-year training of postgraduate students leading to a doctor degree. The programme provides the following research projects: 1. Functional polarisation of dendritic cells in coinfection with MTB and HIV, role of lipoarabinomannan (LAM). Supervisor: Andrzej Pawlowski 2. T cell activation during HIV infection and MTB-HIV double infections. Supervisor: Bence Rethi 3. FAS up regulation and loss of B cell function during MTB-HIV infection. Supervisor: Francesca Chiodi 4. Mice with ^Óhumanised^Ô immune system as model for MTB and HIV infections. Supervisor: Martin Rottenberg 5. Structural anatomy of antigen-specific T-cell responses in patients with HIV and MTB coinfection. Supervisor: Markus Maeurer 6. Immunogenicity and efficacy of HIV and TB vaccine candidates in a mouse model of HIV-1/MuLV-MTB coinfection. Supervisor: Andrzej Pawlowski 7. Interaction of HIV and tuberculosis (TB) with regard to the development of CXCR4 (X4)-using HIV from CCR5 (R5)-using virus. Supervisor: Anneka Ehrnst 8. Development of novel visualization technologies for studies of HIV and MTB infections. Supervisor: Laszlo Szekely Applicants Candidates with a strong solid basis in molecular sciences and a keen profound interest in dissecting resolving the interaction of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and HIV with the host are invited to apply. Research fellows at the beginning of their research career with less than four years of research experience after their Master's degree can apply. The studentships are primarily intended for European students. Swedish residents are not eligible. More detailed information can be acquired from the project coordinator or by consultation of the Marie Curie Programme Handbook at http://europa.eu.int/comm/research/fp6/mariecurie-actions/action/level_en.html Contact: Andrzej Pawlowski: andrzej.pawlowski@smi.ki.se Application deadline is 1 February 2006. Selection of applicants for further evaluation will be done within a month after deadline. The applicant may apply for up to three projects within the project programme. Applications in English should be sent as one PDF file to: andrzej.pawlowskithi-doc@smi.ki.se. The PDF file should contain a cover letter, CV, two letters of reference, a motivation letter and a proof of proficiency in English (e.g. TOEFL). ---------------------------------------------------- From: Martin Burger Date: Sat, 24 Dec 2005 10:24:52 -0000 Subject: PhD-Position, RICAM, Linz A three-year PhD-Position is available from March 1, 2006, at the Johann Radon Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics (Austrian Academy of Sciences), Linz, Austria. The position is part of the newly established doctoral school "Molecular Bioanalytics: From Molecular Recognition to Membrane Transport" funded by the Austrian National Science Foundation, and will enable the successful candidate to interact with groups in molecular biology, biophysics, and / or chemistry, as well as to participate in a curriculum including laboratory courses. Details about the Radon Institute can be found at http://www.ricam.oeaw.ac.at, and about the doctoral school at http://www.wissen.jku.at/mobaindex.htm. The topic of the PhD-thesis in our project is "Direct and Inverse Modeling and Simulation of Transport through Membranes and Water Channels". The aim is to develop models and numerical simulations of water transport through membranes and channels that should allow quantitative predictions in realistic situations. These models will involve partial differential equations. Using these models, the second aim is to determine structural properties of membranes and channels from available indirect measurements in adjacent water layers. The mathematical formulation of these inverse problems leads to parameter identification in systems of partial differential equations, for whose solution appropriate regularization methods should be developed. We are seeking talented and committed individuals, with an excellent master or diploma in applied mathematics, physics, or biophysics, to join the programme. Preference is given to applicants younger than 28. Selection will be made during the "Linz Winter Workshop" (February 3 - 7, 2006), to which the best applicants will be invited. We offer a gross salary of 22900 Euro per year. Applications including covering letter, full c.v., and copies of the graduation certificate should be sent before January, 21 to the speaker of the program: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Peter Pohl Institute of Biophysics Johannes Kepler University Altenberger Str. 69 A-4040 Linz, Austria peter.pohl@jku.at with a copy to Annette Weihs Johann Radon Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics (RICAM) Austrian Academy of Sciences Altenberger Str. 69 A-4040 Linz, Austria annette.weihs@oeaw.ac.at ---------------------------------------------------- From: Chris Bauch Date: Thu, 22 Dec 2005 20:57:10 -0500 Subject: Postdoctoral Position, Theoretical Ecology, University of Guelph Postdoctoral position in theoretical ecology University of Guelph Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in theoretical ecology.
