Subject: Call for Workshop Proposals: CNS*2013, 13-18 July, Paris
22nd Annual Computational Neuroscience Meeting CNS*2013
13-18 July 2013
Paris, France
Call for Workshop Proposals
We are requesting proposals for workshops from the international community of
computational neuroscientists. Proposals from all levels of faculty as well
as advanced postdoctoral fellows are welcome. This is a great opportunity
to organise a small meeting with just a few of the headaches of actually
organising it. Workshop proposals with confirmed speakers and proposals that
specifically schedule room for discussion will be given preference. Based
on previous experience with CNS meetings in Europe, it is anticipated that
not all proposals can be accepted.
Workshop proposal submission instructions for CNS*2013: The last two
days (17-18 July) of the 22nd annual CNS*2013 meeting will be devoted to
workshops, in which computational neuroscience topics can be presented
and discussed. Workshops can be anywhere between one half to two days in
duration. Usually several speakers are invited to introduce a unifying theme,
but ample time for discussion should also be planned.
Submit workshop proposals to: Volker Steuber, Workshop Chair,
workshops@cnsorg.org.
An archive of workshops held at previous CNS meetings is available at
http://www.cnsorg.org/past-annual-meetings. The proposal should contain a
workshop title, a brief description of workshop content (approximately 150
words), and a list of speakers. Please indicate who of the speakers have
been contacted and who have confirmed their attendance.
Workshops submitted before 10 January 2013 will be given preferential
acceptance. Workshop proposals arriving after this date will be evaluated
based on remaining space for additional workshops. No further workshop
acceptances will be anticipated after 13 May 2013.
Travel awards: Based on proposal evaluation, a limited number of travel
awards will be available for postdoctoral researchers, women and minorities in
science, technology, engineering and mathematics to be included as speakers. A
few starting assistant professors may also be given consideration. Please
indicate to the workshop chair which speakers you would like to be considered
for this mechanism.
Springer Computational Neuroscience Book Series: Some of the workshops may
be published by the Springer Series in Computational Neuroscience. Workshop
organizers interested in this mechanism should submit a book proposal
to Ann.Avouris@springer.com and indicate in the workshop proposal their
interest in publishing a book.
Logistics: Rooms, AV equipment, snacks and beverages during breaks will
be provided by OCNS to the workshop organizers. Registration: Workshop
registration will occur through the OCNS registration web site for
CNS*2013. All workshop participants, including speakers must register.

Marie Curie Actions Early Stage Researcher (PhD fellowship) Computational
Neuroscience - Artificial recognition of sounds in complex scenes from
auditory neuronal activity
As part of NETT - Neural Engineering Transformative Technologies (NETT)
is a Europe-wide consortium of 18 universities, research institutes and
private companies who together will host 17 PhD students and 3 postdoctoral
researchers over the next 4 years. http://www.neural-engineering.eu/
>From £35622 - £41567 depending on circumstance per annum
Applications are invited for the above post to work with Dr Chris Sumner and
Professor S Coombes on a Marie Curie Initial Training Network funded project
in Computational Neuroscience to underpin work at Nottingham on the coding
of complex sound scenes in the auditory system. The successful candidate
will register for a 3 year PhD in the School of Mathematical Sciences.
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a joint venture between
Mathematical Sciences and the MRC Institute of Hearing Research, on an
EU funded project in Neural Engineering with a focus on theoretical work
to understand neural computation. The MRC Institute of Hearing Research
is a world leading research institute conducting basic and applied work
in hearing (www.ihr.mrc.ac.uk). This project will develop algorithms for
recognising complex sounds (e.g. speech, music) and mixtures of sounds
from neural activity in the brain. It will use computer models of the
auditory system, recordings of brain activity, pattern recognition and
machine learning techniques to help design better recognition algorithms
for recognising sounds from neural activity. The developed algorithms will
be used to probe how the brain itself separates sound sources. Applications
are encouraged from highly numerate students with degrees in engineering,
maths and physics.
The fellowship includes a flexible secondment, most likely in the second year,
working with Dr Aristodemos Pnevmatikakis at Athens Information Technology
in Greece. It also includes a three-month visit to Universitat Politècnica
de Catalunya in Spain to work with Professor Jordi Garcia-Ojalvo. Candidates
must therefore be able to move between countries as necessary.
Candidates must be in the first 4 years of their research careers and not
been awarded a doctorate degree. Preference will be given to candidates with
experience in mathematical and computational neuroscience. As part of our
commitment to promoting diversity we encourage applications from women. To
comply with the Marie Curie Actions rule for mobility, applicants must not
have resided, worked, or studied in the UK for more than 12 months in the
3 years prior to Sept 2012.
This full-time post is available from the 1st January 2013 or as soon as
possible thereafter and will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a
period of 36 months.
Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr Chris Sumner (chris@ihr.mrc.ac.uk),
Prof S Coombes (stephen.coombes@nottingham.ac.uk), or Dr Aristodemos
Pnevmatikakis (apne@ait.edu.gr). Please note that applications sent
directly to these email addresses will not be accepted. For information
about the School of Mathematical Sciences, one of the most active in the UK,
see: http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/mathematics/index.aspx
Applications will be received online
at https://my.nottingham.ac.uk/pgapps/welcome/. Please indicate clearly
in your application that you are applying for the Early Stage Researcher
position in Computational Neuroscience - Artificial recognition of sounds
in complex scenes from auditory neuronal activity.
Closing date: 30 November 2012.

research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information (orally,
in writing and electronically), and have the ability to write up scientific
findings succinctly for publication.
Applicants should have a PhD in computational or mathematical biology or
a closely related discipline, and it is essential that the candidate has
experience of working in a multidisciplinary environment, ideally interacting
with clinicians or experimental biologists.
The starting salary is £31,948 on Grade F, depending on qualifications
