The Conference on Mathematical Modeling and Control of Communicable
Diseases will be held from Monday through Thursday, January 11-14, 2016
at Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

NEW!!! A selection of contributions presented during the Conference will
be published in a volume of the series "Springer Proceedings in
Mathematics and Statistics". The review process will take place after
the event, more information will be communicated whenever available.

The Conference will take place in the emblematic building of FGV created
by the architect Oscar Niemeyer in Praia de Botafogo, on the shore of
Guanabara Bay, at the foot of Sugar Loaf Mountain. Mini-courses will be
held on Monday, January 11, talks and poster presentation will take
place from Tuesday 12 to Thursday 14. The conference will followed by
satellite events on Friday, January 15, including the annual meeting of
the Brazilian network for modeling of Dengue fever.

Characterized by its boldness and pioneering spirit, FGV is a world
renowned center for quality education dedicated to promoting Brazil's
economic and social development, ranked one of the Top 25 Think Tanks
and Top 100 higher education institutions in the world. IMPA, the
federal research and educational institution widely considered to be the
foremost in Brazil in the area of mathematics (through LAMCA, the
Laboratory of Analysis and Modeling in the Applied Sciences); Fiocruz,
the most prominent institution of science and technology in health in
Latin America; Universidade Federal Fluminense, one of the four
federally funded public universities of the State of Rio de Janeiro; and
Inria, the French research institute dedicated to computational
sciences, co-organize the meeting.
The objective of the organizers is to bring together researchers and
students working on the modeling of human transmissible diseases,
considered in the most extensive sense. Interested academics from a
large spectrum of applied mathematics are expected, with interest
ranging from mathematical epidemiology to statistics, from dynamical
systems to control theory, at the borders of biology (including
entomology and immunology), ecology, or even economy or climatology. The
scope of the event is to provide comprehensive vision of the questions
and methods raised by the mathematical modeling of transmissible
diseases, from theory to application and back: model analysis,
experimental data analysis, qualitative behaviors, control strategies,
game theory are among the different approaches that are most welcome.
One may forecast a substantial interest for the modeling of endemic
tropical diseases (such as dengue fever, yellow fever, chikungunya,
malaria, leishmaniasis...) and of major global epidemics (e.g.
influenza, Ebola fever, HIV...), but the workshop is open to studies on
all types of transmissible human pathologies. The topics include, but
are not limited to, the following:
1. Spatial and seasonal aspects of epidemics
2. Control methods
3. Statistical modeling and parameter estimation methods
4. Qualitative behaviors and general tools from dynamical system theory
5. Evolutionary game theory, phylogenetics
6. Modeling in epidemiology and neighboring fields: sociology,
immunology, environment and ecology, climatology, economy, public
health...
The Conference will feature contributed papers for oral or poster
sessions, including invited and tutorial. Apart from providing a forum
for the presentation of new results, the workshop aims at offering a
strong tutorial content. It will host ten plenary talks, delivered by
some of the best specialists worldly, and will be preceded by three
mini-courses devoted to more focused topics. Undergraduate students, as
well as PhD students, from Brazil or abroad, are strongly encouraged to
participate and will receive attendance certificate. Free entrances to
the social dinner will be awarded to the authors of the Best Student
Poster and to the Best Student Paper.

"Introduction to the Modeling and Analysis of Complex Systems"
introduces students to mathematical/computational modeling and analysis
developed in the emerging interdisciplinary field of Complex Systems
Science. Complex systems are systems made of a large number of
microscopic components interacting with each other in nontrivial ways.
Many real-world systems can be understood as complex systems, where
critically important information resides in the relationships between
the parts and not necessarily within the parts themselves.

This textbook offers an accessible yet technically-oriented introduction
to the modeling and analysis of complex systems. The topics covered
include: fundamentals of modeling, basics of dynamical systems,
discrete-time models, continuous-time models, bifurcations, chaos,
cellular automata, continuous field models, static networks, dynamic
networks, and agent-based models. Most of these topics are discussed in
two chapters, one focusing on computational modeling and the other on
mathematical analysis. This unique approach provides a comprehensive
view of related concepts and techniques, and allows readers and
instructors to flexibly choose relevant materials based on their
objectives and needs. Python sample codes are provided for each modeling
example.

Description:
The Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City is seeking a
talented, self-motivated individual to participate in cutting edge
research as a member of the Bunyavanich Lab at the Institute for
Genomics and Multiscale Biology. The Institute is led by Dr. Eric
Schadt. The successful applicant will be part of an interdisciplinary
team led by Dr. Supinda Bunyavanich that applies computational analysis
and bioinformatics to interpret multi-scale data generated from subjects
with asthma and allergic diseases.

Responsibilities:
-Analyze next generation sequencing data, including whole genome,
RNA-Seq, 16S rRNA, metagenome, and methylation data.
-Develop and implement statistical methods and software to analyze next
generation sequencing data for genetic risk, disease mechanism, and drug
response. Projects will include network construction and mining.
-Integrate and translate genetic, genomic, eQTL, structural, and
clinical data into novel diagnostics, therapeutics and disease
mechanisms
-Maintain complex next generation sequence and array datasets linked to
clinical data.
-Communicate progress with PI regularly and contribute to the success of
the research team.
-Develop and maintain productive collaborations within Mount Sinai and
with outside researchers in academia and industry.
-Publish and present novel research findings in academic journals and
conferences.
-Some supervision of trainees and technical staff may also be required.

Requirements:
-PhD in bioinformatics, computer science, computational biology,
genomics, or a related field.
-Outstanding programming skills in R, Perl, Python, Java, C++, and Unix
shell scripting.
-Excellent track record of analyzing next generation sequencing data.
Experience in network analysis a plus.
-Demonstrated knowledge of statistics, statistical genetics,
bioinformatics concepts, methods and tools. Familiarity with genomic
data tools, repositories, and databases.
-Strong attention to detail and solid analytical skills.
-Ability to work hard and independently while contributing to the team
effort and adhering to deadlines.
-Excellent oral and written communication skills with track record of
productive collaborations.
-Demonstrated ability to work concurrently on several projects, and good
understanding of analytic complexities to do independent research as
well as assist other researchers.

Professional qualifications: Doctoral degree in a mathematical branch of
study. Solid knowledge in applied mathematics, including PDEs, with

Deadline Approaching! Call for Postdoctoral Fellowship Applications at
NIMBioS -- Next Deadline: September 1, 2015

The National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis
(NIMBioS), located at the Univ. of Tennessee, Knoxville, is currently
accepting applications for postdoctoral scholarship at the interface
between mathematics and biology. Highest priority will be given to those
with explicit plans to develop their ability to effectively carry on
research across these fields. We are particularly interested in requests
to support research that integrates diverse fields, requires synthesis
at multiple scales, and/or makes use of or requires development of new
mathematical/computational approaches. NIMBioS Postdoctoral Fellows are
chosen based upon indications that the applicant's research plans are
consistent with the mission of NIMBioS, the applicant has the
demonstrated ability to carry out the proposed research, and the
opportunities provided through NIMBioS will enhance the capacity for the
research to be completed in an efficient and timely manner.
Support: annual stipend of $51,000, full University of Tennessee

The physics department at UBC Okanagan is part of a dynamic and highly
interdisciplinary unit of more than 25 faculty members in the areas of
Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics. The successful
candidates will each have a PhD in Physics, a strong research record,
and demonstrated excellence in and commitment to undergraduate and
graduate teaching. Preference will be given to candidates specializing
in any broad areas relating to (i) radiation oncology or imaging medical
physics; (ii) molecular imaging and biomedical physics with potential
applications to radiation oncology; or (iii) computational biomedical
physics. The Unit is developing a medical physics graduate program under
a joint collaboration with the BC Cancer Agency - Centre for the
Southern Interior (BCCA-CSI). This process will include application to

has active research in radiation oncology physics, medical imaging,
biological applications, and data science, and offers a suite of related

Faculties, and to enhance existing research strengths in Physics, Data
