The joint meeting of the European Society for Mathematical and Theoretical
Biology (ESMTB) and the annual meeting of the Society for Mathematical
Biology (SMB) will be held in Nottingham, 11-15 July 2016.
We now invite proposals for minisymposia at the interface of mathematics and
biology, including all areas of the life and medical sciences. Minisymposia
will be held in two-hour blocks, consisting of 4 talks of 30 minutes each
(including time for questions and changing speakers).
Please fill in the form at

Subject: IMO Workshop 5: Immune Cancer, Nov 8th-13th 2015
Dear Colleague,
We are currently organizing the 5th Integrated Mathematical Oncology
(IMO) workshop that will run from November 8-13th at Moffitt (see link
for flyer below). This workshop is designed to motivate and facilitate a
hands-on modeling experience focused on the role of the immune system in
cancer. Comprising of both an educational event and competition, the workshop
divides participants into four teams integrating clinical, experimental
and theoretical members that will focus their energies on developing
and implementing a mathematical model on the role of the immune system
in cancer progression and treatment. Each team consists of around 10-12
participants from mixed disciplines and career stages, chosen to provide
complimentary skills to help the 3 team co-leaders achieve success. The
teams are expected to come up with a question, build a model, solve it and
give a presentation all within 4 intense days. The morning of the 13th is
dedicated to presentations and judging.
As with last years workshop there will be an opportunity for participants
to showcase their own research during a poster session on the 8th, this
will be preceded by a "speed dating for scientists" to break the ice among
diverse group of participants. To facilitate integration and motivate
participation we are offering an Amazon gift voucher to active participants
of the winning team and to the runner up team. I am also pleased to say that
the leaders of the winning team will be awarded a $50K pilot grant, that
will be administered primarily by the IMO but most likely will facilitate
experimental and clinical validation.
We are also pleased to announce that we are offering deluxe travel awards,
these are extremely limited and competitive - not a first come first
served basis. Each award will cover flight + accommodation + per diem for
up to 6 nights and allow for both national and international scientists to
participate in this unique hands on educational event. If you are a Postdoc,
PhD student or junior faculty interested in participating in the workshop
as a team player, please register asap at
http://imo5.eventbrite.com and
follow instructions. Time is very tight, so please don't wait to register
for this exciting opportunity.

Subject: Post-doc: on Extended Kalman Filter for Applied Neuroscience, OSU
Dear Colleagues:
The Nano Bio-systems and Bio-inspired Engineering Laboratory at The Ohio State
University (OSU) has an immediate opening for a post-doctoral researcher
interested in Kalman Filter for quantitative biology. The focus of the
position is on developing a new theory for extended Kalman filtering for
applications in applied neuroscience and cognitive engineering. The research
results are expected to be implemented in a wearable multi-sensor integrated
system for monitoring cognitive behaviors with a long-term interest on
closed-loop feedback control of a multi-loop decentralized optimal control
system for human performance and medical practices. The successful candidate
will work closely with Dr. Scott Galster (Chief for Applied Neuroscience at
the Air Force Research Laboratory) and Dr. Mingjun Zhang at The Ohio State
University. The position is in the Biomedical Engineering Department at OSU.
This is a basic science and applied engineering research position. We welcome
any recent PhD graduates, who are interested in pursuing future careers in
quantitative cognitive and neuroscience fields to apply. A solid mathematics
background and former experience with Kalman filters are expected. Additional
background in systems and control are a plus. While having a clear goal for
applications, this position is specifically designed to support basic science
research related to applied mathematics and systems science/engineering. The
initial appointment is for one year. Notable theoretical contributions is
a must for renewing this multi-year position as measured by high quality
publications. Strong writing skills for journal papers is highly expected.
To apply, please send CV along with 2-3 publications to:
