The Society of Mathematical Biology Mentoring task force are pleased to
announce a new series of live webinars on academic training for
mathematical biologists.
The first live webinar will be given by Robert Smith? (U Ottawa) whom
many of you know from the Early Career Workshops held at the annual
society meeting. There will be opportunities to ask questions during the
live webinar, which is generously hosted by the MBI.

Title: How to write a modelling paper
Speaker: Robert Smith?
Affiliation: Department of Mathematics and Faculty of Medicine,
The University of Ottawa
Abstract: Publications are the currency of academia. And yet many people
in the sciences, and especially mathematics, are never actually taught
how to write. This webinar will go through the detailed process of all
the stages, from first drafts to revision to responding to reviewers,
illustrating with multiple versions of a worked example. Participants
will also be given access to all versions. The presenter is an
award-winning author of 17 books on both math and pop-culture, as well
as approximately 100 academic articles.

subject: Workshop: Integrated Mathematical Oncology, Nov 3-8, Tampa
We are currently organizing the 9th Integrated Mathematical Oncology
(IMO) workshop that will run from Nov 3rd-Nov 8th at Moffitt. The IMO
workshop is designed to motivate and facilitate a hands-on modeling
experience focused on the development and implementation of the next
generation of tumor board: Tumor Board Evolution. The workshop is
comprised of both an educational event and competition and divides
participants into multiple teams combining clinical, experimental and
theoretical members. These teams integrate their energies to develop and
implement a mathematical model focussed on facilitating treatment
decisions for individual patients across a range of different cancers.
Each team consists of around 10-12 participants from mixed disciplines
and career stages, chosen to provide complimentary skills to help the
3 team co-leaders achieve success. The teams are expected to come up
with a question, build a model, solve it and give a presentation all
within 4.5 intense days. The morning of the 8th is dedicated to
presentations and judging.
As with last years workshop there will be a “speed dating for
scientists” to break the ice among diverse group of participants on the
3rd. The opening presentation on the 4th will summarise what is expected
of the teams and serve to motivate the subsequent hands on model
development sessions. We also plan to have a separate poster session on
the evening of the 4th to allow participants to showcase their own
research. To facilitate integration and motivate participation we are
offering an Amazon gift voucher to active participants of the winning
team and to the runner up team. I am also pleased to say that the
leaders of the winning team will be awarded a $50K pilot grant, that
will be administered primarily by the IMO but most likely will
facilitate experimental and clinical validation.
We are also pleased to announce that we are offering deluxe travel
awards, these are extremely limited and competitive – not a first come
first served basis. Each award will cover flight + accommodation + meals
for up to 6 nights and allow for both national and international
scientists to participate in this unique hands on educational event.
TRAVEL AWARD APPLICATIONS WILL BE CLOSING ON MONDAY 30th OF SEPTEMBER.
If you are a Postdoc, PhD student or junior faculty interested in
participating in the workshop as a team player, please register asap at
imo9.eventbrite.com and follow instructions. Time is very tight,
so please don’t wait to register for this exciting opportunity.

Cancer-Translational Nanotechnology Training
The Cancer-Translational Nanotechnology Training (Cancer-TNT) Program is
led by Drs. Jianghong Rao and Dean Felsher and funded by the National
Cancer Institute (NCI). The vision of this three-year postdoctoral
fellowship program is to train a new generation of scientists with the
skills and educational backgrounds from engineering, chemistry,
materials science, cancer biology and medicine. This program brings
together 28 faculty and 9 Departments from three schools to provide the
opportunity for talented scientists to learn the intricacies of merging
nanotechnology with the biological and medical sciences, specifically
for the use in cancer, in addition to becoming leaders for the rapidly
growing field of cancer nanotechnology. After graduating from this
program, trainees are expected to become interdisciplinary leaders and
pursue challenges in cancer research and clinical translation.
Support is provided for stipend, supplies and travel for up to three
years. Applicants must hold a PhD or MD degree and must be either a US
citizen or permanent resident. We are particularly interested in
recruiting trainees who are underrepresented minorities or come from

-Reviewers agree to abide the terms and conditions of review service,
including maintaining confidentiality about the entire review process.
Please note the following:
Conflict of Interest Policy: You may serve on the same panel as an
application with which you have a conflict of interest (e.g., you are
the applicants advisor, wrote a letter of reference for the applicant,
etc.). However, you cannot participate in the evaluation or discussion
related to any applicant with whom you have a conflict of interest.
Inquiring about, or advocating for, any current GRFP applicant
regardless of review panel is considered a conflict of interest and will
result in immediate removal as a reviewer.
Invitation Status: Registering in the reviewer system or creating a
profile does not commit you to serve as a GRFP Reviewer or guarantee you
will be invited to serve. Invitations to serve will commence in October
2019.
If you would like to be considered as a 2020 GRFP reviewer, please visit
nsfgrfp.org/panelists to register in the reviewer system.
