Group Leader – Theoretical Biology and Biophysics at Los Alamos

The Theoretical Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking candidates for the Group Leader position in the Theoretical Biology and Biophysics Group.

The Theoretical Biology and Biophysics Group (T-6) in the Theoretical Division is one of the world’s premier research groups in quantitative biology. The group provides leadership on theoretical and computational studies of biological systems and bioinformatics to solve pressing health, national and global security challenges, and to advance the frontiers of science. The group integrates an interdisciplinary team of researchers trained in physics, mathematics, statistics, biology, immunology, chemistry, and epidemiology.

The current research portfolio ranges from basic to applied science, in areas such as viral dynamics, immune system modeling, cell signaling, protein structure and dynamics, evolutionary biology, phylodynamics, vaccine design, mathematical modeling of emerging infections, and medical outcome analysis. The group is composed of 22 Ph.D. staff scientists and 11 postdoctoral fellows who are supported by an annual budget of $15 Million, mostly from grants awarded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), including the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the Department of Energy (DoE), the Department of Defense (DoD), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and other government agencies. The group contributes to national and global security, with its researchers combining mathematical modeling, large scale computer simulations, and data analytics (bio-informatics, machine learning and statistics) with biological knowledge and insights to support Los Alamos National Laboratory’s bio-/health security mission.

The Theoretical Biology and Biophysics group is recognized internationally for its capability in host disease modeling, phylodynamics and bio-informatics. Past and present accomplishments in bio-informatics include the genesis of GenBank and the current NIH funded HIV database that was used to develop an HIV vaccine (currently in phase 3 clinical trial). The Quantitative Biology Schools and Conferences originated in the group, as well as the mathematical model that guided the development of cocktail therapy for AIDS. The group also holds the current record for the largest all-atom molecular simulation.

The group leader’s responsibilities include strategic and operational management of the group.
