Postdoctoral Position in Mathematical Physiology

The Britton and Schnell Labs at the University of Michigan Medical School’s Department of Molecular & Integrative Physiology have a postdoctoral positions available in the area of Mathematical Physiology.

This fellow will lead an entirely unique project titled: “Resolution of Disease, Complexity, and Evolution.” In 1966, Francis Crick declared that “The ultimate aim of the modern movement in biology is to explain all biology in terms of physics and chemistry”. Drs. Britton and Koch took Crick’s broad statement as motivation to originate an approach to understanding disease-complexity-evolution that is based upon the general theme of energy transfer and maximal entropy production. From a high-capacity animal model less susceptible to disease, we have formulated a word model of the metabolic energy transfer hypothesis for exercise capacity that diminishes the risk for disease. We propose translating this model into mathematical terms to identify the molecular and physical mechanisms responsible lowering the risk of disease.

In addition of interacting with Drs. Steve Britton and Santiago Schnell, the successful candidate will also interact directly with, Drs. Richard Gonzalez and Lauren G Koch.  The candidate should have experience in the mathematical modeling and numerical solutions of differential equations, inverse modeling with genetic algorithms and an understanding of biochemistry and physiology. This position would suit an individual who has a PhD in engineering, applied mathematics, or theoretical physics-chemistry. Candidates must have experience writing publications and possess excellent communication skills. Salary is at the NIH/NRSA scale with one year currently available.  Early-on, our team will collaborate to seek future years of support as a high priority.
