from: Owens, Roland (NIH/OD) [E] <owensrol@mail.nih.gov>
re-sent from: Mejia, Raymond (NIH/NHLBI) [E] <ray.mejia@nih.gov>Staff Scientist
Epidemiology and Biostatistics Program, DCEG
(deadline: February 17)The Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG), National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH) is recruiting an accomplished Staff Scientist for the Epidemiology and Biostatistics Program (EBP). DCEG’s epidemiologists, geneticists, and biostatisticians conduct population and multidisciplinary research to discover the genetic and environmental determinants of cancer and new approaches to cancer prevention. The Division’s research has an impact on public health policy in the United States and around the world.
The Staff Scientist will support a new prospective cohort study of 200,000 adults in the US to understand the etiology and natural history of cancer, which can inform new approaches in precision prevention and early detection of cancer. The Staff Scientist will be part of the coordinating center and will provide technical expertise to develop and maintain data standards and programming for the cohort, particularly focusing on data integrity. The Staff Scientist will be responsible for the management of large databases, building the programming infrastructure and tools, and working on the design and development of the data structure for data capture and validation and help to inform configuration of tools. The Staff Scientist will also develop and test QA/QC procedures for data to be collected from complex health surveys, transferred from electronic medical records, and acquired from other sources. The Staff Scientist will act as point of contact for researcher inquiries to provide complex data information outside of the scope of the data query tool accessible to researchers.
The successful candidate will hold a doctoral degree in epidemiology, statistics, science, or other quantitative field, and minimum 10 years relevant experience. The candidate will be skilled in programming with SAS, R, and/or SQL or similar programming language, including strong macro skills; have strong analytical skills with the ability to organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy; adept at visual presentation of data, memos, and reports to both technical and non-technical audiences; and have ability to respond to time sensitive requests independently, work well under pressure, as well as work with large amounts of fragmented data in a fast-paced environment. The candidate will also have excellent organizational and time management skills, as well as strong verbal and written communication skills.
Selection for this position will be based solely on merit, with no discrimination for non-merit reasons such as race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, political affiliation, marital status, disability, age, or membership or non-membership in an employee organization. NIH encourages the application and nomination of qualified women, minorities and individuals with disabilities. NIH provides reasonable accommodations to applicants with disabilities. If you require reasonable accommodation during any part of the application and hiring process, please notify us. The decision on granting reasonable accommodation will be made on a case-by-case basis. This position is subject to a background investigation.
Salary and benefits are commensurate based on the incumbent’s qualifications and experience. The Staff Scientist is a full-time equivalent employment position. Full Federal benefits including leave, health and life insurance, long-term care insurance, retirement, and savings plan (401k equivalent) will be provided. Interested individuals should send a cover letter briefly summarizing research interests, accomplishments and scientific experiences; curriculum vitae and bibliography; and the names and address of three references to:

Tenure-Track/Tenure-Eligible Investigator
Biostatistics Branch, NCI-DCEG
(review begins: February 29)The Biostatistics Branch (BB) in the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG), National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is recruiting for a tenure-track/tenure eligible position to work on methods development and applications in a highly collaborative and data-rich environment with one-of-a-kind data and computational resources.
BB investigators develop novel analytical approaches from cutting-edge scientific challenges faced by epidemiological studies to identify and characterize environmental and genetic determinants of cancer risk, as well as clinical and cancer prevention studies. These challenges include choosing an efficient study and sampling design, integrative analyses of high-dimensional, time-dependent data such as data derived from electronic medical records, geographical/spatial statistics, biosensors, omic technologies to measure biomarkers, genomics, as well as designing validation studies and methods to evaluate and correct for measurement error in exposures and clinical outcomes.
The successful applicant will have opportunities to work on a wide range of analytical challenges because of the breadth and depth of our program. They will develop an independently initiated methodological research program that will focus on solving statistical challenges in cancer epidemiology and/or genetics. Opportunities to hire postdoctoral fellows and computational support will be provided. Of particular interest are applicants focused on methodological and applications research in high dimensional and integrative data, spatial data analysis, and causal inference. We seek qualified applicants with all areas of statistical expertise in methods, including but not restricted to semiparametric and survival analysis including competing risks, functional data analyses, Bayesian and non-Bayesian computations, and network theory.
Applications will be evaluated on demonstrated potential to develop a creative, independent program of statistical research applicable to cancer epidemiology and genetics, and to collaborate effectively on epidemiologic studies. The ideal candidate will have the opportunity to build an innovative research program that takes advantage of the highly collaborative and data-rich environment of DCEG. Applicants should have a doctorate in biostatistics, statistics or a related field and knowledge of the basic approaches used in cancer epidemiology. A record of publications demonstrating an ability to conduct independent research on statistical methods is required. Publications documenting collaborative research in epidemiologic, clinical, biomedical or biological sciences are highly desirable. The successful candidate should have strong communication skills to discuss scientific issues with non-statistician colleagues and to write scientific papers.
Salary is commensurate with research experience.
Interested individuals should send a cover letter; curriculum vitae and bibliography; please include in your CV a description of your mentoring and outreach activities, especially those involving women and persons from racial/ethnic or other groups that are underrepresented in biomedical research, a brief summary of research experience, accomplishments and research interests and goals; copies of three publications or preprints; and three letters of reference to:
