The Senior Research Associate will support and coordinate all aspects of Professor Anita Layton’s Quantitative Biology and Medicine research program. Their responsibilities include the development of computational models, data analysis, project management (assisting in grant applications, monitoring timelines and budget), coordination of research group activities, as well as the mentoring and co-supervising of the junior research team members. The incumbent will work collaboratively with Professor Layton and others in the Lab, as well as scientific collaborators within and outside of the University.
Term: 12 months. This role is contingent on funding.
Responsibilities
- Development of Computational Models
- Provide computational and technical expertise to facilitate the implementation of the Lab’s research projects
- Identify, collect, and analyze data needed for research projects
- Develop custom software to facilitate the implementation of new computational models and manage their dissemination
- Thoroughly test and validate those models and develop user manuals
- Conduct simulations using those models to answer scientific questions
Data Analysis
- Develop machine learning models and carry out statistical analyses on biomedical and scientific data
- Prepare reports to summarize findings from statistical analysis
- Collaborate with researchers in health and natural science within and external to the University
Project Management
- Manage grant awards and budgets for the Lab
- Oversee the management of the Lab’s computing resources
- Manage the Lab’s social media presence and help promote the Lab’s research program
Ongoing oversight and guidance to research team including, but not limited to the following
- Providing day-to-day supervision and coordination of research activity (e.g., providing computing advice and direction for data analysis and report generation) of other members of the Lab
- Discuss and resolve technical issues related to computational/programming issues, implementation of new algorithms, data manipulation, and GPU computing for other members of the Lab
- Coordinate research group activities, including weekly group meetings
Assistance in Report and Presentation Preparation
- Contribute to the preparation of manuscripts to be submitted for peer review, and of research grant applications
- Assist in the preparation of presentations for dissemination of research at scientific meetings
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Computer Science or another discipline with a significant programming component
Three (3) or more years of experience in a research-driven academic environment - Demonstrated experience in the ability to test, manipulate, and repair large-scale computer code
- Demonstrated experience in analyzing complex data
- Exceptional computer programming skills
- Strong data analytic skills
- Excellent written communication
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently, and as a member of a team
- Communication skills in all mediums including social media, and demonstrated ability to promote the Lab’s research program
- Experience in writing grant proposals an asset
- Occasional travel
